Hello parents!

I wanted to send you a link to our Tuesday calendar song:

You can use this as a brain break during the day or a way to start moving in the morning.

Today I wanted to talk with you about reading with your child. Reading for just 10 minutes a day is so beneficial for their imagination, critical thinking skills and vocabulary acquisition. Here are a few questions to ask your child when reading:

1. Who is the main character?

2. What is the setting in the story?

3. What is the problem in the story? How did they solve the problem?

4. What do you predict will happen next?

5. Which part of the story did you like the best? Was that at the beginning, middle or end?

These are a few prompts to get your child's brain working and thinking while they listen as a beginning reader.

If your child is capable of independent reading set up reading time by sitting together and taking turns reading one page at a time if they need the support. When you read, model strong phrasing and expression for them. When your child reads, let them attempt hard words before sounding it out together. This is also a great time to explain new vocabulary to them. Don't be afraid to vary your text; you could look through a magazine, picture books or poems.

I am also providing you with a link to the Bullard website where teachers are hosting a live reading event for the remainder of the month. I will be reading a story with Mrs. Oden on Friday (3/27) at 2:00 if you would like to join in. The website will put up the links as they are available, here is the one to the main page:

It is recommended that you download Skype before attending the live viewing.

As you go through this week, you should be finishing up the packets I sent home with your student. If you are done, no worries: use those online sites I have posted on the blog in the meantime. If you are not done: no worries, keep on working that hour a day to maintain those skills. I am currently compiling some online resources I have and will be emailing you individually with those as I finish completing them. Some of these will be large files and I don't want you to become overwhelmed. I will give you specific pages to look at and directions that will help your child complete these activities. As always, please reach out to me if you need anything and I will do my best to help.

Missing you!!!

~Miss Katie
