Hello Friends!
Welcome to my blog. I will be posting online supplemental materials here while we are out of school. You all have received a packet of materials that includes grade level Math, Science, ELA, Literacy, and Social Studies. I was able to differentiate a few assignments for several students on Friday but with the limited amount of time we were given to prepare I was not able to get to everyone. So, today I am posting a few accommodations you can provide to your child while you are learning together.
Chunk work time: Work on assignments for short periods of time (~10 minutes) with breaks in between. In the classroom, we use first/then language so students understand that first we work on ________ then you earn a break. Feel free to use this timer that I use in class to keep students on track and let them know when it is time to transition.
Use visuals: Set up a daily schedule for your child. This can include work time, snack, play/break, meals, special activities and other routines you do during the day. Routines and a consistent schedule will help your child visualize what their day looks like and takes away the anxiety of the unknown. You can make this a fun activity by printing off pictures, cutting out visuals from old magazines or writing out each part of the day.
Provide positive reinforcement: After your student has finished a task make sure to let them know they are doing a great job. This can be in the form of verbal praise: "Great job Katie, I loved how you took your time and tried your best even when that problem was hard!" an edible reward: skittle, marshmallow, orange slice... or a fun activity: fun board game, outside play time, technology break.
Stay tuned for more activities each day. I miss you all so much, good luck and don't hesitate to reach out for help!
